Honoring Our 2025 Founder’s Award Recipients
Steve and Marian Meyer
Steve and Marian’s leadership, generosity, and deep care for the people of Honduras have shaped VHC’s mission and inspired countless others to serve. We are honored to celebrate them this year.
-
Marian worked for eight years as a Peri-Anesthesia Care and Recovery (PACU) Nurse at Reston Hospital. She joined Reston in 1996, working in the main hospital surgery unit. In 2004 Marian moved to the new Surgery Center adjacent to the hospital, where she was employed for the next fifteen years. She retired in December 2018.
In 2017 a coworker had told her of the VHC Medical Brigade and shortly thereafter, she volunteered to assist with its upcoming surgical mission to Honduras. She saw firsthand the desperate condition of many of the Honduran patients, and gained a deep appreciation for VHC’s life-changing work.
In 2025, Marian will make her eighth journey to Honduras. She now serves as a team leader for Pre-Op and PACU at the Hospital San Benito Jose (SBJ) in Comayagua.
Marian also assists year round at the VHC warehouse, maintaining inventory control for the Recovery Room supplies, and working with her fellow Brigade members to package and prepare the supplies for shipment to Honduras. All the while, she’s worked diligently at recruiting, each year assuring that the Brigade’s PACU is adequately staffed.

Steve was employed by Costco Wholesale Corporation for 36 years. Impressed by Marian’s growing commitment to the VHC cause, he too “got involved” in his spare time, volunteering to assist as needed with a variety of small projects. In the summer of 2021, he retired from Costco.
In February, 2023, Steve accompanied members of the Board to Honduras. In addition to visiting the Hospitals Santa Teresa and SBJ, where the Medical team does its wonderful work, the Board members traveled several hours to remote villages in the rugged mountains north of Comayagua. The group saw firsthand the harsh conditions and resilient nature of the villagers, who make a subsistence living, growing coffee on small family farms.
He saw how the VHC initiatives, rural medical clinics, chlorinated water systems, personal hygiene education and school lunch programs were making a difference in the quality of life for the villagers, especially the children. In a “village town hall meeting” held during the Board visit, one young mother, her three-year-old daughter in her lap, referenced the new clean water supply, stating “my baby doesn’t get sick any more.” For Steve, that said it all, he’d found his calling.
